Dog Car Seat

Travelling with a dog in the car is safer and more comfortable when they have a dedicated seat. Dog car seats keep small and medium dogs secure, elevated, and settled, reducing movement during the drive and helping prevent car sickness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dog car seats are legal in Australia and are consistent with road rules in all states and territories. Australian road rules prohibit driving with an animal unsecured on the driver's lap, and several states allow fines for carrying animals in a way that endangers them or distracts the driver. A secured dog car seat (used with an internal tether clipped to your dog's harness) is one of the most practical ways to comply with these rules. Always check the specific road rules in your state, as penalties and requirements vary.

For many dogs, yes. Motion sickness in dogs is often linked to the inability to see a stable visual horizon, the same mechanism that causes car sickness in people. Elevated dog car seats raise small dogs to window height, giving them a stable reference point. Veterinary guidance also suggests keeping the car well-ventilated and limiting food before travel. If your dog's car sickness is severe or persistent, consult your vet, as anti-nausea medication is available for dogs.

A dog car seat works alongside a harness; it is not a replacement for one. The seat provides a stable, elevated platform; the harness and internal tether keep your dog secured within that seat. Using both together gives your dog the best combination of comfort and safety. Modern Pets also carries a range of dog harnesses compatible with our car seats.

The internal tether clip (attached from the seat to your dog's harness) prevents jumping and limits movement to within the seat. For dogs that are new to car seats, it helps to introduce the seat at home before using it in the car, and to reward calm behaviour with treats. Most dogs adjust within a few trips.

Weight limits vary by model and are listed on each product page. As a general guide, most elevated booster seats are rated for dogs up to 8–10kg. (Meanwhile, non-elevated car seats such as the Premium Dog Booster Seat have no weight limit as they're essentially a travel dog bed for the car). If your dog is near the upper weight limit of a seat, we recommend sizing up or contacting our team for guidance.

Many anxious dogs travel better with a car seat than without one. The elevated, enclosed design gives the dog a defined personal space, which can reduce the overstimulation of an open back seat. For dogs with significant travel anxiety, combining a car seat with a familiar blanket or item of your clothing can help. Consult your vet if anxiety is severe.
