Most pet gates are designed with dogs in mind, which is why so many cat owners watch their cat clear one on day one. A cat gate needs height before anything else. Both gates in our range are extra tall Modern Pets designs made for dogs and cats, so they give a jumper a lot more to think about than a standard baby gate. Cats squeeze as well as leap, so gaps at the sides and bottom matter as much as the height.
A cat fence barrier usually means outdoor containment, like a roller or mesh system fitted along the top of a backyard fence. An indoor cat gate does a different job. It closes off a doorway, hallway or stair so your cat stays in the rooms you choose. Our gates are for inside the house, and they’re handy for keeping a cat out of a nursery, giving a new kitten a safe zone, or stopping the dog raiding the litter tray.
Two styles, each with its own strength:
Most cat gate indoor setups go across a hallway or at the bottom of the stairs. Measure the opening before you order and check each product page for width range and height. Keep in mind that a cat safety gate works best with nothing nearby to launch from, so move stools, pot plants and side tables away from it.
Introducing a gate goes smoother with a bit of patience. Set it up open for a day so your cat can sniff it and walk past, then close it for short stretches while you’re home. Reward calm behaviour on the right side with treats or play, and avoid shutting your cat in a room it links with bad experiences, like the laundry after a vet trip.
Living with a dog as well? Our dog gates and barriers range has more widths and styles. And give your cat something better to do on its side of the gate, like a cat tree with a view of the action.
No gate is guaranteed against a determined climber. Height helps most, followed by keeping furniture well clear so there’s no launch point.
Yes, both suit doorways. Check the product page for the width range and how each gate mounts, since some installations need screws.
As tall as your space allows. Standard dog and baby gates are easy for most cats to clear, which is why both of ours are extra tall. Check each listing for exact heights.
Some will test it in the first few days. Supervise early on, reward your cat for staying put, and make sure there’s something interesting on their side of the gate.
Common uses include:
Check the product page before fitting any gate at the top of stairs. Only use a gate there if the manufacturer says it’s suitable for that position.
Not at the moment. Our gates are designed for indoor use only.
