Clumping litter changed the daily reality of owning a cat. Instead of tipping out and replacing an entire tray, you simply scoop the solid clumps each day and top up, which keeps the box fresher for longer and makes the whole job quicker. If you want the easiest litter to maintain, scoopable clumping litter is almost always the answer. The question is which type, and which one suits your cat.
We have been helping Australian cat owners since 2018, and clumping litter is what most of our customers reach for. Here is how it works, the types available, and the clumping litter we recommend.
Clumping litter is designed so that liquid binds the granules into a firm, solid lump on contact. That clump, along with any solids, lifts out cleanly with a scoop, leaving the rest of the litter dry and usable. You scoop daily, top up what you remove, and do a full change far less often than with non-clumping litter. The better the clump strength, the less mess breaks apart in the tray and the fresher the box stays.
Bentonite clay: the traditional scoopable litter. Bentonite clumps hard and controls odour strongly, which is why it has been the default for decades. The downsides are real, though: it is heavy to carry, can be dusty, tracks through the house, and is neither biodegradable nor flushable.
Tofu and plant-based clumping: made from natural plant fibres, this newer style clumps firmly like clay but weighs a fraction as much, produces far less dust, and is biodegradable, with small amounts flushable. For owners who want easy scooping without the dust and weight of clay, it is the standout choice.
